2 Petabase Goal Reached

Dr. Richard Moore, Sequencing Group Leader, reported that the GSC has passed the 2 Petabase sequencing mark.

We reached 2 Petabases of total sequence (2,000,000,000,000,000 bases) generated by the Genome Sciences Centre over the weekend.

Chart showing the history of sequencing at the GSC

We reached our first petabase on December 22nd 2015, 16 years after the formation of the GSC.

The second Petabase has taken us just 28months. At a rate of 1.35 Terabases per day.

In this time we have sequenced more than 80,000 libraries, 33,000 genomes and 17,500 transcriptomes.

With 76% of the bases coming from whole genome sequencing.

Congratulations to all on generating, storing and analyzing such a phenomenal amount of sequence data.
