Mouse Atlas of Gene Expression project funded by Genome Canada

A Quantitative and Comprehensive Atlas of Gene Expression in Mouse Development

Vancouver, BC, Canada | [Marco Marra and Pamela Hoodless] Over the years, the common laboratory mouse has proven to be an invaluable model for studying many human diseases. What is lacking, however, is a thorough understanding of the genes that regulate mouse development. The primary goal of this project is to develop a comprehensive "atlas" of genes, which are activated or "expressed" at various stages of mouse development in different types of tissues.

Since disease is believed to result from a failure in the regulation of genes, an understanding of how gene development is controlled in mice will provide an important insight into the disease process in humans.

The data generated in this project will be maintained in an electronic database, available to researchers around the world, to assist in the development of better models of human disease and, ultimately, in the creation of new treatments for illness.

This project will involve researchers from the British Columbia Cancer Agency; the University of British Columbia and collaborators at the U.S. National Cancer Institute.
