A review of novel applications of next-generation sequencing technologies

Applications of next-generation sequencing technologies in functional genomics
This is an invited review examining how next-generation sequencing technologies have impacted the field of functional genomics. The next-generation sequencing platforms, Solexa/Illumina, 454/Roche, and SOLiD are discussed in the review along with the standard Sanger sequencing procedure. Studies using these sequencing techniques for the examination  of cellular transcriptomes and epigenomes are reviewed. Novel applications of sequencing in areas of functional genomics that became possible with the rise of next-generation sequencers are discussed in detail.
