A review of techniques for the detection of genome rearrangements in tumor genomes.

From cytogenetics to next-generation sequencing technologies: advances in the detection of genome rearrangements in tumors.

This paper is an invited review published in the Special Issue of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, entitled CSBMCB — Systems and Chemical Biology. Dr. Marco Marra was invited to submit the review as the recipient of the Merck Frosst Prize, Canadian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular & Cellular Biology, 2007. The paper discusses how the detection of genome rearrangements in cancers evolved from crude techniques involving visualization of chromosomes to novel sequencing approaches that allow the detection of mutations at single nucleotide resolution.
