Determining Potential Virulence Factors from the Protozoan Parasite Leishmania donovani

Proteomic analysis of the secretome of Leishmania donovani.

Determining Potential Virulence Factors from the Protozoan Parasite, Leishmania donovaniLeishmania donovani is a protozoan parasite responsible for the disease leishmaniasis.  Approximately 12 million people in 88 countries suffer from leishmaniasis.  This parasite acts by entering the cells of its human host and releases proteins into the intracelluar environment to ensure the parasites' survival and reproduction.  In this study, we used proteomic and bioinformatics methods to determine the complete set of proteins that are secreted from this pathogen.  This complete set, also known as the secretome, will allow us to identify the virulence factors that are essential for the development and progression of leishmaniasis.
