Normal development requires the carefully controlled expression of genes. Many disorders, such as cancers, result from abnormal gene regulation so it is thought that an understanding of how development is controlled will provide important insights into the disease process. As the mouse can be studied throughout all stages of development, from the single cell zygote to the adult, it has emerged as the premier model in biomedical research for studying normal mammalian development and human disease. The primary goal of this project is to create an atlas of genes expressed throughout development in numerous stages and tissues. The data generated in this project are maintained in an electronic database, available to researchers around the world and are helping develop better models of human disease and ultimately, new treatments for illness.
