Research Associate

Job Code: RA 10-07-2019

The Research Associate provides laboratory support for our antimicrobial peptide discovery research arm at the Genome Sciences Centre. The successful applicant will work in the laboratory to test the therapeutic candidacy of novel compounds while also working independently in a cross-disciplinary environment and participating as a project team member on specific genome research projects, including to help develop laboratory protocols.

Key Accountabilities 

  • Collaborate with the Principal Investigator, other Lab Personnel and Staff members to develop and test laboratory protocols and assays in conjunction with our antimicrobial peptide research

  • Set up the laboratory and instruments

  • Conduct literature reviews and provide input and recommendations to managers

  • Prepare documentation in accordance with prescribed standards (eg. Protocols, SOPs, research proposals)

  • Participate in lab meetings and present work for review by others

  • Contribute to the preparation and/or presentation of research manuscripts

  • May provide day-to-day work direction to others

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or a related field
  • Molecular biology and microbiology laboratory skills are essential for this position

  • Experience in microbial and eukaryotic cell culture techniques, cell imaging, peptide biochemistry, nucleic acid extraction, and preparation of DNA/RNA sequencing libraries

  • Demonstrated effective communication skills

  • Experience in bioinformatics (eg. knowledge of Python, R, PERL, unix, version control), and prior experience with analyzing next-generation sequencing data (DNA, RNA) will be considered assets 

The successful applicant will be part of a team of research scientists working in a dynamic environment with the overarching goal of developing bioinformatics pipelines and laboratory protocols to mine ‘omics data and test hypotheses in the laboratory. You will be contributing to advancing science and genome research locally and worldwide.
